New revolution in printing technology Variable data printing and personalized communication are on the verge of a new revolution. So far, 121 print communication was only feasible for direct mailings up to a few thousand copies, due to technical factors. Machines designed for variable data printing are still working with toners today. They can print up to about 3600 sheets per hour. The paper size of most printers is limited to A3, but there are printers that can handle larger formats, such as our own MGI. The cost of digital printing is much higher than offset and is more harmful to the environment, because digital printers are big energy consumers (the toner must be 'burned' onto the paper, which requires a lot of heat).
All the benefits of offset, with the ability to personalize But that will soon change. Some manufacturers, including HP and Kodak, are developing a new technology that works with high-volume inkjet print heads. This heads spray ultra-thin ink jets, interrupted with a high frequency, directly on the paper. This process can also run continuously, so that paper rolls can be used. This latest generation of inkjet printers makes it possible to print at a speed of up to 200 meters per minute! This technology brings digital printing very close to offset. It eliminates most drawbacks of the current toner printers and has the added advantage that you no longer have those coarse grid points in your print.
New challenges: customer data management At the same time we face a new challenge. First our marketing databases have to be made suitable for individual mass communication. How will we use all information from loyalty cards and CRM databases for this new mass application? A number of processes for collecting and managing customer data will need to be fully rethougt. Also privacy issues we must consider. Comith has already begun to tackle this challenge. We work hard at developing our Marketing Repository System (MRS), which includes modules for data management.
Believe us: personal mass communication is the next hype among marketers. Although this technology won't push aside social networks such as Facebook, which remain important in any communication strategy.
